Visualizing the return of 2,000 captive rhino to the wild

African Parks acquired the largest Southern White Rhino breeding operation in the world, saving the rhino from a bankruptcy auction. Their goal is to rewild the rhino to parks and protected areas over the next ten years. They asked Brick Factory to build a microsite to support the project. Visit Website.

Project Goals

Explain & Inspire

In collaboration with African Parks, we reduced and refined the details of an incredibly ambitious project to a succinct and inspiring message.

Recruit Subscribers

As an engaged subscriber base is an essential lifeline for long-term projects like this one, we built targeted messaging and supportive infrastructure to recruit supportive site visitors.

Raise Relocation Funds

The enormity and urgency of the fundraising need, as well as the incremental progress toward meeting it, needed to be conveyed graphically; so, Brick Factory created a tapestry of 2000 rhino, gradually colorizing as contributions occur.

Process

After achieving a thorough understanding of the project, including its scope, logistical challenges, and costs, Brick Factory began building out a homepage with inspiring visual features and a simplified explanation of African Parks vision. Our client’s well-established track record of wildlife management and stunning photography insured access to a wealth of material to back it up.

Central to the build-out was a tailored donation system, which allows for one-time donations in any amount, individually sponsored relocation of a rhino – both via single payment or via installment plan, and real-time tracking of fundraising progress. In all cases, the language, interface, and imagery were carefully chosen to illustrate the practical impact of contributions to the actual relocation of rhino.

The hope is that site visitors feel both emotional connection and immediacy, while gaining a clear and fairly detailed understanding of the costs and time commitments associated with Rhino Rewild.

Technology

Developing a microsite allowed Brick Factory the freedom to create an independent identity and design language, specific to the Rhino Rewild campaign. The microsite is built in WordPress CMS, and employs the front-end framework React for the donation platform. Stripes was chosen to power a versatile, nimble, donation system.
