Mattress Recycling Council

Reinventing the Website of a Nonprofit

Bye Bye Mattress Recycling Company Project hero

The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) is a nonprofit formed by the mattress industry to operate recycling programs in states that require it by law: California, Connecticut and Rhode Island. MRC educates many different groups about mattress recycling: consumers, retailers, manufacturers, recyclers, and more. MRC hired Brick Factory in 2020 to redesign their website.

Home Page

Brick Factory lightened up the overall look of the home page, using photos of people to create a more inviting and approachable presence. The colors of the logo, which overpowered the look of the old site, are integrated more subtly into the redesign.

Throughout the new site, infographics highlight key statistics in a meaningful way. Visitors can see the magnitude of MRC’s impact at a glance.

In order to simplify the main navigation, we added dropdown menus. The “Our Impact” dropdown menu absorbed several topics that had previously lived in the main navigation. Making this change de-cluttered the main navigation, and organized the pages into user-friendly categories. Along the same lines, we added a dropdown menu for Program States, which shows an option for each state that mandates mattress recycling.

Organization by Stakeholder

MRC provides information to consumers, retailers, manufacturers, recyclers, and more, all of whom are looking for different resources. We created a new resources tab, which brought together as much information as possible. No matter what constituency you belong to, you can now click on your tab and find the information most relevant to your needs.

Personalization by State

As part of the redesign, we added a microsite for each state, featuring a wealth of information. In addition to learning where and how to recycle a mattress, visitors now see good news stories about the impact of mattress recycling for the state and the environment.

If the visitor to the site is physically present in the state in question (say California), they see a California-specific version of the home page. Visitors who reside in the three program states are also encouraged to sign up for the email list via a prominent call to action.
