Bringing Liberties Journal to Life Online

Liberties is an independent quarterly journal known for its thoughtful, provocative essays on politics and culture. The publication approached Brick Factory with a clear challenge: create a website that mirrors the print journal’s distinctive style, entices new readers with select free content, and ultimately converts them into subscribers.

Project Goals

Clear Distinction Between Free and Premium Content

To help visitors navigate the site, we created a clear separation between free and subscriber content. Free pieces appear in a dedicated sidebar, while the main body of the site is reserved for journal previews and paywalled material, reinforcing the value of the print and digital editions.

Design that Reflects Editorial Identity

The Liberties print edition has a distinct aesthetic. Our design team translated this to the web by selecting elegant, web-friendly fonts and updating the site’s color scheme to reflect each new quarterly edition, ensuring continuity between the online and print experiences.

Driving Reader Subscriptions

To encourage subscriptions, we offered a taste of the journal’s deeper insights. The site features the full table of contents with links to article introductions. Visitors can read two full articles per month by registering—providing just enough access to motivate sign-ups.

Process and Features

At the project’s outset, we immersed ourselves in Liberties’ visual and editorial identity. We worked closely with their team to define a content strategy that delivered real value to first-time visitors while spotlighting the depth and quality of the paid content. The sidebar blog delivers fresh, accessible posts, while gated content introduces readers to the journal’s most compelling pieces.

The site’s design offers a streamlined reading experience that reflects Liberties’ unique voice. From typography to color palette, every visual detail supports the editorial mission. Registered users can explore selected premium content, and a simple, intuitive user interface helps guide them to subscribe when they’re ready for more.

Technology and Integration

We built the Liberties Journal site on WordPress, giving the editorial team control over homepage content and article management. The site also integrates with a third-party ecommerce and CRM platform, making subscription management seamless behind the scenes.
