The International Youth Foundation (IYF) works around the world to ensure youth develop the leadership, technical, and life skills to earn a livelihood.

IYF engaged the Brick Factory about a complete redesign of the organization’s flagship website. The primary goals of the new program were to create a modern new online brand identity and to establish thought leadership by highlighting its publications and writings.

Planning

During the project’s planning phase, the Brick Factory and IYF worked together to flesh out the feature set, content and architecture for the new website. During planning we reviewed all legacy web assets and content and made the decision to streamline everything into a single website. We also brainstormed and planned key areas of the site such as Where We Work, Library, Global Network and Staff. As part of the planning we developed mood boards, sitemaps and wireframes of key sections.

Site Design

The International Youth Foundation wanted a design that was eye catching, easy-to-use and that highlighted their most recent content prominently. The Brick Factory solved the problem by designing a homepage grid that both shows the faces of the youth IYF is trying to reach and drives people to key section of the site. For the interior pages our goal was to get out of the way and let the content tell the IYF story. Given the explosion of mobile and tablet the last few years, it was vital that the site look just as good on a smartphone as it does on a desktop computer.

Given the sheer volume of design work that had to be completed, it was vital that we create an overall site style guide for use throughout. This style guide made sure that elements such as font treatments, navigational elements, buttons, lists, etc. were consistent throughout the site.

Drupal Development

The previous version of the IYF website was built in Drupal 6. In addition to the core website, IYF also had numerous microsites built in other platforms (WordPress, other Drupal instances and Blogger). As part of the project the Brick Factory team rebuilt the core IYF website in Drupal 7 and consolidated content from the various microsites into the core site.
