Points of Light

Points of Light – the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service – mobilizes millions of people to take action and change the world. In 2014 the organization partnered with the Brick Factory to update the design of its flagship website, www.pointsoflight.org.

Points of Light has a myriad of resources that are targeted at three very distinct audiences: companies, nonprofits and volunteers. The organization’s existing website was dated and didn’t doing a good job of routing key audiences to the materials that were relevant to them. Our Brick Factory team worked with Points of Light to develop user personas that outlined the motivations and needs of key audience groups. Using these user personas and data gleaned from an analysis of existing site traffic, we created a revised navigation that focused on connecting visitors with the content relevant to them as quickly as possible.

Content Hierarchy and Wireframe

The project called for the Brick Factory to design a new homepage and templates for key pages of the website. We started the design process by creating a list of content elements to be featured on each of these pages. Working with Points of Light, we put these content elements into priority order and used this content hierarchy to create black and white wireframes.

Once the wireframe and mood board were approved, The Brick Factory created the actual designs for the new site. Once approved, the designs were turned over to Points of Lights’ internal development team for implementation.
