IUCN Red List 50

IUCN Red List 50

2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, which is the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of animal, fungi and plant species. To celebrate the 50th anniversary and raise awareness about the IUCN Red List, IUCN and the Brick Factory launched a digital campaign that highlights the program’s success and lays out its vision for the future.

Planning and Design

During the planning phase of the project, the Brick Factory and IUCN worked together to flesh out the overall goals of the project and defined the feature and content set of the micro-site that would be the center of the campaign.   Our team created a visual design that uses photography and infographics to engage visitors in the IUCN Red List’s mission.

Over the year’s IUCN has written hundreds of Amazing Species pieces, which are profiles of a small number of species the IUCN Red List has assessed over the years.  To highlight these species and tell the story of the IUCN Red List’s work, we created a Species section that includes online versions of the Amazing Species profiles.

Matching Game

The micro-site features a questionnaire that matches visitors with a species based on their answers to a few simple questions. After being matches with a species, visitors are encouraged to share their species match on their social media profiles.

The Brick Factory and IUCN created an interactive timeline that communicates key landmarks in the IUCN’s 50 year history.

The campaign micro-site features a pledge that visitors can take to show support for the IUCN Red List’s goal of assessing 160,000 species by 2020. After signing the pledge visitors are encouraged to promote the site on their social media profiles.
