One95

One95

One95 is a counter-narrative program that unites young people fighting against extremism. The program was launched at the September 2015 Global Youth Summit Against Violent Extremism. The Summit, run in partnership with the U.S. State Department and White House, brought together youth activists, government officials, and private sector experts from dozens of countries to engage over new ideas on building resilience to extremism.

In 2016, One95 sought to bring the community created at the Summit online. Brick Factory worked with One95 to develop a new website that allows youth activists to collaborate on new ideas and programs and connects them with funding for their grassroots, counter-extremism initiatives.

Planning and Design

During the planning phase of the project, the Brick Factory and One95 worked together to flesh out the features of the new site and to create a streamlined new site architecture.

We wanted to use the homepage to illustrate the need for programs like One95. When users first arrive on the site, the text, “Violent Extremism is on the Rise,” is the focus. Users then scroll down to see videos that show extremism is on the rise and demonstrate that something must be done. Grant-winning youth projects are shown next to inspire action. And finally users are asked to engage by viewing, submitting, and commenting on projects.

Projects

The primary purpose of the One95 site is to build a community of youth activists around the world. The keystone of this is the projects page. Users are able to submit their projects - from an Australian online magazine to an educational non-profit in Somalia - for feedback. Users can discuss how to improve projects and share their own personal experiences.

In order to moderate the projects without being too heavy-handed, One95 requires all users commenting or submitting projects to register for a One95 account. Additionally, administrators have the ability to review and approve projects, but not to edit them.

Drupal

One95 was built in Drupal 8, the latest version of Drupal. Drupal is a powerful system that allowed us to develop the community-based functionality they were looking for. Drupal will also give One95 the ability to manage and grow their site with little assistance. One95 staff are able to approve new projects, add grant winners, and manage user accounts.
